I had begun to think that it was just my imagination or that I was just being overly sensitive as it seemed to me that there had been an increase in commercials for diamonds running on TV this holiday season but after a discussion with others at work last night, we have come to the conclusion that there ARE more jewelry commercials than usual this year.

I feel like I've been inundated with one commercial after another proclaiming that "a diamond lasts forever" or "every kiss begins with Kay" and whereas that might warm the heart of every woman out there hoping to get that special piece of jewelry from her very special someone to make her holiday complete, I can't possibly be the only one who watches these things and gets just a little - well - bummed. And I'm not just referring to this Christmas where I've got a snowball's chance in a very warm place of getting a diamond or even a cubic
zirconia but I'm remembering Christmases past.

As much as I might like to state that I don't want to be lumped in with every stereotype out there, particularly the one that states that "all women love to get jewelry", I have to admit to having hoped in the past to get some sort of pretty bauble from my "man" at Christmas. However, I apparently made the supreme mistake of marrying men who were more of the practical nature when it came to
the big gift of the holiday for rather than getting a diamond-shaped pendant or a diamond-studded bracelet, I received a sewing machine or a 35mm camera or something else that was more for the house than it was for me. Sigh ...

And even though those were lovely gifts, I couldn't help but to be just a little let-down because I wasn't surprised with the velvet-covered box presented to me in front of the roaring fireplace like the women in the commercials. Commercials like that set up just a little hope of expectation for those of us who have even a small glimmer of romance down in our souls and even though we know full well that real life is not like life in the movies or on TV or even in commercials it can be just a little disappointing to find that real life is a sewing machine and not a diamond.

Oh well, at least this year there isn't even a glimmer of hope or expectation as I've got no
significant other to even offer up a toaster oven but those commercials still make me wish for the velvet-covered box and roaring fire ...

  1. yeah, my "diamond" this year is cookware! Although he did give me an early Christmas present this week.... he bought my Satellite Radio!! YIPEE!!
