I've Got a Question, You've Got an Answer

********************
Memorial Day, a federal holiday in the United States which is celebrated on the last Monday in May, is heralded as the holiday that normally kicks off the summer season.

I get the feeling that when the holiday was first observed as a way to remember those brave men who had given their lives in the Civil War (or as Empress Bee likes to call it, The War of Northern Aggression) back in 1865 they weren't thinking about all of the vacations, barbecues, ball games, fireworks, trips to the beach, and other summer activities that ensue following this much-anticipated three-day weekend but the times they have a-changed and people now look at Memorial Day as the official start of summer and all that is fun and relaxing.

With that in mind, my question today is:

Are you doing anything special on this 3-day weekend?

  1. Since Hubby and I are now retired, we stay close to home and leave the holidays to people who work and really look forward to the 3-day weekends. Why put our car on the road and only make traffic worse for everyone else?

  3. Chris and I celebrate our anniversary on the weekend, usually by going up to the lake (his parents' place). One year, we helped them move (1st anniversary). Another, we helped move the boat from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario (2nd anniversary)...is it a wonder we didn't have kids right at the start? :) This year (11th), we're actually going out to dinner! And hosting a wedding shower but that's a tale for a different venue.

  6. It's a 'bank holiday weekend' here in England too.

Strangely enough there is a 'War weekend' on at a local venue (read about it here - http://akelamalu.blogspot.com/2007/02/local-attraction.html

I suppose it's a bit like those re-enactment thingies you do in the States but without the fighting!
So that's where we will be on Sunday.

  10. When we first arrived here [12 years ago] they were all just holidays. I think we probably did visit memorials and historical sites back then.
Perhaps we should start doing it again.

  12. To the boat as usual. We are being voted on this weekend for joining a private island on the California Delta. So, if we are voted in then we will have access to this island year round. So, it's an exciting event. We will be spending the weekend there so the members can take a look at us and then vote. Big BBQ planned as well.

  22. To answer the first of your question -yes, this holiday was begun during the Civil War as a means of remembering the fallen. There's some discussion about where it actually started and Boalsburg, PA -about 40 miles from where I live - is one of the towns that lays claim to having been the first to observe decorating the graves. I grew up in the era when the holiday fell on May 30th and was always called "Decoration Day." It didn't become "Memorial Day" until the govt. decided to make it an official three-day holiday weekend.
End of History lesson now. My plans -have to get my fanny in gear, arrange to have some time so I can go get flowers and take them to family graves, etc., and get them planted there before Monday. That means, I have to figure out a time when my daughter or son-in-law will be here to stay with the two little ones cause I sure don't need to try to plant flowers with a 13 month old screaming in a stroller and his three-year-old sister wanting to wander off, hither, thither and yon now, do I?
