The State of Things in Florida

Just in case anyone has forgotten that I have a second daughter who hasn't had the opportunity to spend time hobnobbing with rock stars lately, I thought I would write a post today about how Jamie is doing down in her new home in Florida.

It's hard to believe that it's been over a month since her time with me for the summer came to an end and I had to take her to the airport for that painful parting at the plane. We've talked every week since she left and after some initial trepidation about her new high school - she was sure it was going to be full of nothing but preps* - she seems to have settled in quite well and apparently there are enough non-preps for her to have made some new friends!

She tells me that she really likes her art teacher who sounds more like an aging rocker, which would make him more than a'ight in her book! Jamie has always been as different as day is to night from Amanda when it comes to her 'type' of music. Whereas Amanda is a big MSI and MCR fan, Jamie's favorite group is AC/DC along with Queen and Led Zeppelin. The longer the hair on a guy, the more Jamie likes him. It's too bad she wasn't born in the 70's so that she could have enjoyed the 80's firsthand but I was too busy being a teenager myself at that point in time.

As of right now I'm not at all sure when I'm going to get to see her again but I'm hoping that maybe at some point in time perhaps Amanda and I could afford to take a vacation and go down to see her in Florida. I'm not a huge fan of Florida (I lived in Tampa as a kid when my Dad was stationed at MacDill Air Force Base) but there are a lot of places we could go see while we were down there. I was thinking maybe we could book a Kissimmee vacation as it's less than an hour and a half from where Jamie currently lives and we could all go have a good time - minus the sisterly fighting for a change!

Not that I have any great desire to go to Disney again - sorry, Mags! - but there are a lot of other fun things we could do and Lord knows I could use a vacation one of these days. It's a thought anyway and in the meantime I'm just glad that Jamie seems to be adjusting okay to her new surroundings though that doesn't surprise me; I swear she was a cat in a previous life as she always seems to land on her feet!

*prep - a label for those who conform to typical teenage behavior, in areas like clothing, school behavior, and sports participation; because preps usually are more ambitious and/or image-conscious than others the popular belief is that preps hate nerds/goths/punks/etc.

  1. Glad to hear she's doing well!

  2. That's good that she's adjusting well. Starting a new school and choosing to be so different from the norm...that can be a tough combination.

Good for her for sticking to who she is and what she likes.

  3. good job with this!! see how easy? and i love kissimmee!! of course i love disney too...

    smiles, bee

  4. Great to hear that Jamie has settled in her new school. You must miss her so much. Talking on the phone every week is good but I hope you get to Florida to see her soon. x

Whew! Glad that the school is prep-free! :) I remember those days. I am so glad I don't have to go back and relive them. I'm glad to haer she's doing well.

  6. You must miss your daughter terribly. I cannot imagine.
Glad to hear she is doing well at the new school.

  7. I agree, preps are the worst!! *shudder* :) And I think Jamie has good taste, I love long hair on guys too!

Thanks for visiting!
