I've Got a Question - You've Got an Answer

One of the things I like best about the month or so (depending on where the dates fall on the calendar) between Thanksgiving and Christmas would be all of the great foods that come out only at this time of the year - Christmas cookies, fancy desserts, delectables on the buffet table that you never see at any other time, eggnog, candies, fancy nuts, etc., etc. The goodies are varied and endless and so hard to resist!

I heard on the news the other morning that the average person gains approximately seven pounds between Thanksgiving and Christmas and is it any wonder? Even if you just sampled a little bit of each thing, chances are good you're going to gain some sort of weight but it's the holiday season and good foods and good friends seem to go hand-in-hand so how can one resist? And why should one resist? It's like the lyrics from Sleigh Ride say -

"There's a happy feeling nothing in the world can buy
When they pass around the coffee and the pumpkin pie."

Part of the "comfort and joy" of the Christmas season comes from the wonderful foods and delicious smells and good times that we have sharing it with our friends. Which brings me to this week's question -

What is your favorite holiday food?
Speaking of favorite foods - some of you asked about the recipe for the Macaroni & Cheese with Shrimp that I was raving about following the party I had at my house for my co-workers last week so I asked Matt, my supervisor and really-oughta-be-a-chef-extraordináire who cooked all of the food for last week's soireé, for the recipe. He sent it to me and it's really super easy so if anyone wants to give it a go, here it is for your enjoyment -
  • Any pasta - your choice - cooked to just this side of al denté
  • Velveeta type cheese - melt and mix into the pasta
  • Bake for 20-25 mins at 350 then add any bread crumbs you would like (I like Corn Flakes crumbled or crushed) and also add the lobster or shrimp
  • Put back in 350 oven for 10-15 minutes; pull out, stir gently and add a smoked gouda cheese ( or any soft cheese of your liking)
It's easy, it's good, and it will really impress your guests should you choose not to horde it all to yourself and actually serve it to others!

  1. My absolute favorite holiday food, hands down, is pumpkin pie with whipped cream. Luckily, I've discovered several recipes that use Splenda instead of sugar, so I can still enjoy at this time of year.

    OMG! That was just so weird... I was singing that song line just as I read it...Had that song humming in my head all morning! (twilight zone!)

    My fave is the little smokies in the sweet and sour sauce...It's that perfect balance of salty/sweet. For me, it's just about anything (except ludefisk) :-P

    Oh! She's making fudge this year for the first time in ages. That used to be my favorite.

    Haven't had it this year, but when I move into the new place, I'm making a turkey dinner!

  7. I'm going over to Mo's after the first of the year for a turkey dinner. I'll do all the clean-up too.

    Hands down, pumpkin pie with whip cream. Pumpkin cheesecake is just fine too. Yummy. Great question Linda. :)

  8. Apparently the Pumpkin Pride is pouring in. Every Thanksgiving and Christmas, I am ordered to bake one pie each for all the attendees. At two pieces per day per person, each pie should last its owner for three days. It is amazing the number that fail to make it to day two.

  9. I'm not a huge fan of pumpkin pie however I DO LOVE my momma's home made dressing! It's the best. I think I could eat it 365 days a year!

  10. I love, love, love pumpkin ANYTHING but my wife won't touch it, so I rarely cook anything at home with pumpkin.

    So Thanksgiving & Christmas holidays are great because at nearly any party or gathering, there'll be pumpkin pie or pumpkin bread or whatever!

    Also, eggnog is a cherished holiday treat that my wife won't come near. The sugar is a bit much for me, so I have to really pace myself with very small servings, but this year I found a soy-based eggnog that's lower in sugar & fat, higher in protein, and tastes exactly like eggnog should (once I add an extra dash o' nutmeg, that is!).
