I've Got a Question, You've Got an Answer

Before I get to my question for this week, I wanted to take the time to apologize for not being a very good blog visitor this week at most of the blogs I read regularly. I attempted to get to some posts that were in my Google Reader last night and the night before but to take them all on was a pretty daunting task considering that this has been quite the week.

Between getting the stomach bug from hell last Saturday that knocked me for a real loop for several days to having Jamie here for another week to it being ridiculously busy at work most days (apparently there were a lot of people who decided to give drug rehabs a try as part of their New Year's resolutions and they all decided to call 911 this week including one guy who told me he was "suffering from mental telepathy") to just not having the energy to spend much time on the computer all just left me way behind in reading everyone else's posts. Also, it took me some time to set up the Fallen Heroes tribute on my sidebar as well as write the two posts for the four men who have already fallen in the line of duty this year.

With things more or less going "back to normal" after Jamie flies back down to Florida tomorrow (pending any other illnesses or mishaps), I shall endeavor to do better and not only read but actually comment on the wonderful posts that all of you put a lot of time and energy into writing. Honest!

All of that kind of leads into this week's question, one that I was thinking about last night while trying to fall asleep - ah, the things that run through one's mind while sleep alludes ...! -

On average, how many comments do you get on your posts?
There are some blogs out there that I've seen that get over 100 comments on every single post they write and to me that is totally mind-boggling and amazing! I couldn't even fathom getting such a reaction to something that I wrote but I must admit that it would be totally cool! Of course it would probably also require that I reciprocate in kind and leave comments on all of those blogs whose bloggers left me a comment and that would then require blogging to be a full-time job - something that would pay the bills even less than my current status of being gainfully employed at a 48-hour a week job does!

So, to answer my own question, I'd have to say that I get - on average - probably between 10 and 15 comments on a post. How about you folks?

  1. First, I love the story about the guy suffering from mental telepathy. Anyway, it really varies how many comments I get. Strictly informational posts get very few. Personal posts, esp. ones where I ask readers to answer a question, can get 20-35.

Reminds me of one night we listened to the scanner and the Nashville Police were called to this guys' apartment because he was haunted by a dead man's leg...OY VEY! Like I said the other day. Folks don't get paid enough!

I average about 4... Hell, I'm just excited someone reads my blog and comments! Geez, it's about the only time folks really listen to me! LOL!

  3. You don't have to apologise honey, we all have periods when we don't have much time.

Re comments I probably average about 25 not including my own replies to comments. I know some people answer each comment separately which bumps the comment figure up. I tend to answer a lot in one comment box. Some posts generate more comments than others and I think it depends on how long lapses between posts.

As long as someone is reading what I write I'm happy. :)

  4. I do a lot of memes so my average is probably around 15-20. It depends on what I do. If I have a question then it's much higher.

Lois...I feel your pain! I average 4or 5 comments. I need to really flesh out WHY I'm doing I don't let the low numbers get me down so much...wah. But Linda, you are my commenting pressure or anything. :-)

  6. I tend to get between 14 and 18, possibly just over 20 for the TWQ.

  7. I get only a handful every few days. I suspect people to not like talking to the media (or afraid ?)

If you are getting that much, your doing great. Even on the site's I visit regularly , I barely see it go over 11 on any article published.

This is a mind bogler for alot of Bloggers, including myself.

Keep up the Great Work Girl !

  8. it's funny, when i write something personal i seem to get more, around 30 or so...

    glad you are back honey!

    smiles, bee

  9. I probably average 5 or 6. I'm not sure if we don't make too much of that. It is like talk radio. Most listeners never call in but they love to listen. But then you see Dan at the Blah, Blah blog and you go "Holy crap!" Glad you are back at 100%.

I really don't stop and think about the kind of 911 calls that come in--I'll bet some of them are really interesting!! I just popped in to say hello, Linda. Have a wonderful weekend.

  11. Some of my posts get more comments than others. I like to see a new name every once in while too.

I'm such a geek. I went to my last 24 posts and found a total of 375 comments. Since I answer my comments with at least 2 and sometimes 3 of my own comments, I subtracted 48, to come up with 327 reader comments.

So let's say I average 12-14 reader comments per post.

  12. I've been such a bad blogger these days and I'm not getting around to all the blogs that I normally read. I guess I average around 10 per post.

I've got to sit down and start one of those google reader thingys... I think that may help me ALOT!

Glad you are feeling better. Have a great weekend!

Great story. Your job has to be mentally draining to say the least.

My comments vary from post to post, usually because I post so much (although not as much lately) they'll be lower because people won't comment on every post, they'll pick one. Generally speaking 10-15 on non meme posts.

  14. Like Travis, it depends on the post (excluding special days like BlogBlast For Peace). Sometimes it's 10, sometimes it's 30. I would love to get comments from everyone but I realize some people just don't want to leave them. I don't understand how some folks (like Dan....good blog though) can get so many comments. Haven't figured that out yet. I think our circle of friends is really good about leaving comments for others and answering those that are left on our blogs. There's a "secret" I haven't discovered yet...working on that. By the way,
You've been tagged by the Queen of Memes.
    Long live the dungeon.
No Autographs, Please - The Band Meme

  15. P.S. You must hear the strangest stories in your line of work.
    Telepathy? That's a riot.

Off to read you Fallen Heroes posts.

  16. I have a small group of folks who read regularly and get 2-3 per post. I can barely keep up with my regular reads so it is just about right.

  17. I seem to be hovering around 8-10 comments these days. At one point it was in the teens but I guess I've lost a few here and there...was it something I said? :~)

  18. On Manic Monday days, I'll get 15-30 depending on who is making the rounds. On normal days between 3 and 5 even though the visits to the site stay about the same. Kind of makes me wish people would at least "Kilroy was Here" in passing.

  19. About 4 usually. Not too fussed about that as I blog mostly as a diary for myself.

  20. I definitely think that hits & comments have gone down since the popularity of Google Reader has increased. But I still average between 15-20 comments per post.

  21. well, since you and penofjen have been gone, I was down to 3 THREE Theasaurus Thursday players this week and I'm TERRIBLY DEPRESSED about it!!

I was averaging about 10 comments a post before Thanksgiving but I guess the Sea Stories scared off all my readers......

Sooner or later more will come.....I hope.........

  22. Anonymous5:40 PM EST

I get a steady 5-7 comments per post, not counting my replies. Sometimes, if I whine just right, I get 10-12 comments on a post. :0)

  23. Anonymous12:01 AM EST

Comments? We don't need no stinkin' comments. :-)
