In many ways our life in New England is quaint and old-fashioned but when it comes to education we're as up-to-date as anyone in any location. A number of parents in our community have been discussing a new program which will help our local school district continue to provide quality education for our kids.
The program is called "System for Teacher and Student Advancement" -- TAP -- and it is being adopted by schools throughout the country. The program aims to increase productivity in public educational institutions across the United States and the indications show that it is moving successfully toward this goal.
TAP was developed by Lowell Milken an education reformer. The Lowell Milken Foundation invests a great deal of resources towards improving education in our country. The Lowell Milken Foundation believes that we can improve our schools through innovative actions which include investing resources to cultivate the potential of both the classroom staff and its pupils. TAP encourages students to develop skills, knowledge and experiences while, at the same time, rewarding classroom teachers whose students demonstrate success. Through the TAP program, everyone benefits. Students advance academically and gain skills that allow them to succeed in the world of advanced studies and work while teachers feel appreciated and experience professional advancement. TAP's ultimate objective involves guiding students toward becoming contributing and productive members of society.
TAP succeeds because the project invests funds in a school to encourage the entire school staff to unite in the effort to provide quality education for the students. Teachers receive added planning sessions with peer mentors and are rewarded financially when student evaluations show that the pupils are advancing in their studies and learning skills. This sharing among colleagues creates an atmosphere of support that goes a long way toward improving schools in all areas of the country, including large cities as well as small towns.
