A Thursday Thought

I've always found it rather sad that a Christmas tree goes from being this in all of its glory -

To this when everything is said and done-

It always gives me a twinge of guilt when the time comes to stick our former tree by the side of the curb and wait for the mulching to begin which may be part of the reason why it took me so long to finally get our Christmas tree out of the house this year.  Well, that and I smacked myself a good one on the top of my head last week during the initial taking-down of the tree and it took me another week to finish the job!  However, the living room is back to just being the living room now and I'm thinking the spot where the Christmas tree was would be an ideal place for a treadmill.  No sense wasting all that space, right?

While I ponder that some more, everyone have a great Thursday but before you do that, please pop over to Captain Picard's Journal and ask the Captain to pass along birthday greetings to his good friend, Graham, who is celebrating - I hope! - over in England today!

Leaf Me Be!

On the side of our house stands one tree - one rather large tree - that started dropping its leaves back around the beginning of September and continued to drop them until about a week and a half ago. As those following me on Facebook know, I have been battling fallen leaves now for several weeks and I vowed that Saturday was going to be the end of the battle.

With rake and bags in hand, I faced my foe in the yard ...

... about two hours, seven more bags, one cranky teenager, several passes with the lawn mower, and lots of sore muscles later I am happy to say that I think I am finished ...

... now to wait for the Norwich Department of Public Works to come by and remove the bags containing the bodies of the dead (leaves)!

I do love fall but this part I could do without!  I think I'm finally done, though ... or at least I sure hope I am!

Manic Monday - Tree

Morgen chose the word "tree" for this week's Manic Monday Meme and rather than post a picture of my little fiber optic Christmas tree in all of its two-foot glory again, I thought this might be the perfect chance to use a picture that I took this past September while out doing some cemetery touring in the dark.

Night Tree

What looks like a small white dot in the middle of the picture was actually the moon - believe it or not! This picture was shot with my older camera, the Kodak Z712, in the area of Yantic Falls, a place I've posted about several times in the past and will probably post about again in the future!

To see more trees, be sure to check out the Manic Monday Meme - I'm sure there will be at least one or two Christmas trees in the mix!

Creative Photography #10

Tree at Fort Griswold
It's time once again for Roger's Creative Photography Contest and once again I'm entering just  under the wire but as long as I get my entry in by Wednesday, it's all good - right, Roger?  Truth be told, I was going to sit this week out but my good blogging buddy Princess Patti talked me into entering a photograph again this week so I acquiesced and dug through my pictures.

My past contest entries seem to have been mostly landscapes so this week I thought I would try something a little different and go with a single tree.  No moon, no clouds, no sunset - just a tree!  However, I must confess that this picture was taken at night which shouldn't surprise anyone who's been reading my blog and knows I've taken to prowling the countryside by the light of the moon in search of pictures.

There's a good chance that this tree may make a reappearance in September as I'm working on a post of a historical nature and this tree is part of that however it will probably reappear in a slightly different incarnation! Be sure to look for it!

In the meantime, click on over to the Creative Photography blog and take a look at this week's other contest entries.  You can tell Roger I sent you!

A Wordless Wednesday Update

********************
Due to the fact that I worked a total of 48 hours from 7:00 a.m. Sunday to 3:00 p.m. this afternoon with yesterday being another double-shift, I just didn't have the time to do a Wordless Wednesday post this week. However, I thought I would do a Wordless Wednesday post of sorts this evening.

Anyone remember my Wordless Wednesday post on April 4th? I had taken a picture of the very large tree out in front of the Norwich Free Academy while waiting to attend Amanda's Spring Concert Band performance. It was still pretty cold here in Connecticut so the trees had not yet begun to bud and were still looking pretty barren.

Many thought this looked like a "ghost tree" or something out of Lord of the Rings or The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and I would have to concur. I think many a director of a Hollywood fright-fest would find this tree to be quite fascinating.

As they say "time changes everything" and that most definitely applies when it comes to trees every Spring and Fall. The below picture is the same tree and was taken last week when I was attending the outdoor Pop Concert at NFA. Big difference, isn't it?

I apologize for the quality of the picture but I was obviously facing the wrong way in regards to the light and it was hard to get the whole tree in the picture. It probably would have helped if I had been able to remember the angle that was in the original picture and had tried to replicate it but, truth be told, it was a spur of the moment thought to take a picture so that I could do a comparison post and I couldn't remember from which angle I took the original.

You can't really tell from this picture but the tree is not a weeping willow as a lot of people previously thought even though it tends to look like it. It doesn't have tendrils but rather regular, rich green leaves which cover the branches that all hang down giving it the weeping willow effect.

I doubt that most kids who attend Norwich Free Academy give much thought to the beauty of the campus but it really is quite the place with quite the tree.
