Down By The Thames

Friday evening was gorgeous so I asked my friend Amy if she'd like to head down to Groton with me to try to take some pictures of the full moon. Ever since she took me to Eastern Point Beach to see the fireworks a couple of years ago, I just love that place for picture-taking. I know it's just the Thames River meeting up with the Long Island Sound but there's just something about it that I find really, really appealing plus there's the added bonus of New London Harbor Light just across the Thames River. Amanda could tell you how much I like lighthouses lately so that's a big plus in my book!

This first picture shows a ferry heading over to Long Island and a sailboat coming back towards New London with a beautiful sunset in the background.

The sunset isn't quite as pretty in this picture but you can see New London Harbor Light just on the other side of the Long Island Ferry; it had just become dark enough for the light to come on.

Meanwhile, looking out towards Long Island Sound, there were some beautiful pink clouds dancing in the blue skies.

A couple enjoys the evening sky from the rocks at Eastern Point. You've got to admit, a sky like that is pretty romantic, is it not??

As it got darker, the beacon from New London Harbor Light painted a swath of light on the darkening Thames River.

This shot was taken looking across towards Avery Point in Groton. This time it's the moon casting a glow on the water along with the many lights of Avery Point.

Finally, I may have mentioned before that I take horrible pictures of the moon. It's something I'm just not good at but I do like to try every once in awhile! Even though the moon is just a big ball of light in the night sky, I still rather like this picture. One of these days, I'll figure out how to do take good pictures of the moon - I hope!

Looking at the Sky on Friday

I've come to the conclusion that I am just no good at doing memes on a regular basis but I can certainly try to do one every once in awhile, right? Please tell me that I can be at least organized enough to do a meme every once in awhile or I'm going to have to give over my astrological sign to someone else as certainly no one has ever heard of a totally disorganized Virgo!

It's been a long time since I've participated in my friend Tisha's wonderful Looking at the Sky on Friday meme but I've certainly seen quite a few gorgeous skies on other people's blogs - like the beautiful pastel skies I saw at Ralph's blog today - and I was reminded that I had taken a picture this past Fourth of July while on the way home from my mom's house in Canterbury back to Norwich for the annual Fourth of July Fireworks Show that I had wanted to use for this meme. As a matter of fact, I distinctly remember thinking "this would be great for Tisha's meme!" when I pulled into a gravel pit to take the shot!

That little itty bitty white spot in the middle of the picture is the moon, which you could probably see better if you click on the picture and biggify it! I don't own a zoom lens yet so unless I've managed to talk Kevin into letting me borrow his, I have to do what I can with my regular 18-55mm lens. Needless to say, it makes the moon look as far away as it really is! Trust me, this scene was a lot prettier in person as the camera didn't do the color contrasts justice, especially with the evening skies melting into the clouds, but I thought it was still rather pretty.

In addition to that picture, I also forgot that I had fireworks pictures from that same night to show you - see how absent-minded I'm getting?!? Again, no fancy lens - just my regular old one so they aren't spectacular but they're definitely fireworks!

So there you have it, one Looking at the Sky in the evening and a bunch of Looking at the Sky when it was lit up with fireworks! No matter what sky you're looking at today I hope it's a good one and don't forget to go by Tisha's to see what other skies there are in the Blogosphere!

Moonlight on Monday

When I got home from work this past Friday night, it was still fairly warm out so I grabbed the camera and my tripod in an attempt to see if maybe - just maybe - I could get a nice picture of the half moon that was overhead. I couldn't ... but I did get this rather nice picture of the moon peeking out from behind the tree in my front yard along with a couple star glints, too.

Moon behind the tree

One of these days I'm going to get a nice picture of the moon but in the meantime, guess I'm going to have to keep working on it! I can think of worse things I could be doing!

Creative Photography

Full Moon This past Friday a lot of people got to see the biggest full moon that was going to appear in the sky until 2018 ... I didn't. Well, I mean, I did but not until I got out of work at 11:00 and by that time it was so high in the sky that trying to take a picture of it would have been totally futile unless I had some amazingly huge telephoto lens ... which I don't.

I hear it was quite the sight to see and I'm really sorry that I missed it though I've seen some very nice pictures on other people's blogs who were not only fortunate enough to see the moon but also to take some pictures of it.

Moon photography - as I'm learning - is really quite tricky, though and even if I had been able to try to capture some pictures, I have a sneaky feeling that they wouldn't have come out right. Or at least not as "right" as I would have liked them to.

The picture that I've chosen for Roger's Creative Photography Meme this week is one that I took on Sunday morning whilst on my way into work. It was about 6:30 in the morning but the moon was still very bright in the sky and I decided to at least try to take a quick picture of it from the driver's seat of the car (I was pulled over at the time!).

The tree branches aren't exactly what you would call sharp but I kind of like the fuzzy look, it makes it look more three-dimensional to me - well, either that or my aging eyes just make everything look that way!

Don't forget to check out the Creative Photography blog if you'd like to see some more great pictures or if you've got one you'd like to enter yourself!

Manic Monday - Moon

I haven't done a Manic Monday Meme in quite some time but how I could possibly resist this week's theme of "Moon"?!? I just couldn't, especially considering that I just finished reading Book 2 in the Twilight Series that I mentioned last week. New Moon is the follow-up to Twilight, the young adult fiction story that Amanda and her friends thought I should read before the movie version is released on November 21st.

The Twilight Series was written by Stephenie Meyer, born here in Connecticut yet raised mostly in Arizona, and Twilight was her first ever novel which has obviously achieved huge success and a major following of teenage fans plus at least one 50-year old as I am totally hooked! Having finished Twilight last week I had to wait for Darci to bring New Moon with her from New Jersey for me to read as I couldn't get my hands on it at my local library due to the overwhelming demand by other avid readers.

The four books in the Twilight Series tell the story of Bella, almost your typical American teenager, and Edward, your definitely not-so-typical teenage vampire - two souls who find themselves completely and totally intertwined with each other after they meet in the tiny town of Forks, Washington. As a complete and total sucker (no pun intended) for a good love story, I find myself really enjoying the books and am totally looking forward to the movie's release next month.

Having admitted to getting a bit annoyed with the character of Bella in Twilight, Amanda warned me that I was going to like her even less in New Moon but that turned out not to be the case at all. Not to give away the story to anyone who hasn't read them yet but does want to read the books, in the beginning of New Moon Edward leaves Bella for what he thinks is her own good as obviously being involved with a vampire has its down sides. Bella is understandably devastated and acts accordingly.

After finishing the book I asked Amanda why I was supposed to be more annoyed with Bella and she said that it was because of the way that Bella handled Edward's leaving. She thought that Bella overreacted but Bella's reaction was something that I could completely and totally understand having been there - done that - eventually survived that with a broken heart of my own that I thought would never heal. As I tried to explain to Amanda, until you've lost someone that you love more than life itself, you probably couldn't understand the hole in her heart and her life that Bella was obviously experiencing and that Amanda saw as an overreaction. Teenagers!

Unfortunately I could totally relate and perhaps that's why Bella had my whole understanding and sympathy and why the book had my almost undivided attention (well, in between phone calls and radio dispatches at work) and I was able to finish it on Saturday! Thankfully Cate brought books 3 & 4 - Eclipse and Breaking Dawn - with her this weekend so I am able to continue following the love story without interruption this time. Well ... expect for those darned phones and radio transmissions at work as well as needing to take time to sleep, eat, shower, and maybe blog a bit!

Even though the Twilight Series is categorized as Young Adult, I would really have to recommend it to anyone who loves a good romance with or without a supernatural twist. Oh, and if f you aren't into vampires there are some werewolves thrown in for good measure in New Moon. I'm quite curious to see what else shows up in Eclipse!

Finally, as a last touch for this Manic Monday Meme, I just had to post one picture of the moon taken during last month's Rhode Island beach vacation. Kinda looks like something a vampire might like, doesn't it??

Be sure to pop on by the new home of Mo's Manic Monday Meme and check out the other entries for this week, too!

Norwich By Night

2 There is just about nothing worse than sitting in dispatch and looking out at the beautiful evening spread out in the city below me and knowing that I'd much rather be out there with my camera than sitting inside answering 911 calls. No offense to those who need help but when the sky looks like this outside - that's where I want to be!

As I drove home Saturday night it was almost 11:30 but the full moon was shining so brightly and it was such a beautiful night that I knew I had to pick up my camera and head back out the door in search of some night shots. After grabbing my trusty Kodak Z712, my tripod, and extra batteries (just in case) I decided that myNSH by moonlight first stop was going to be in the vicinity of the old Norwich State Hospital. It's just down the road from me and I've always wanted to try to take some pictures there at night. Of course, you can't just stroll around on the grounds as it's posted about every 50 feet with "State Property - No Trespassing!" signs and there are security guards who patrol in SUVs who make sure that's enforced but I figured if I parked my car down by the Hebrew cemetery and walked back up the road in front of the grounds, then I wouldn't be trespassing. After all, there is a sidewalk so it should be legal, right?

After parking under the old tree near the cemetery, I walked about 500 yards back up the road and found a spot across from the old Administration Building (which I've posted pictures of before) and set up my tripod. The amount of traffic still out and about was ridiculous but no oNorwich State Hospital at Night for Mone stopped to ask me what on earth I was doing so I figured I was okay, especially as there were no security officers in sight!
Norwich State Hospital has a reputation for being haunted, which is understandable considering the number of lost souls who once made their home there, but as I stood in the dark with moonlight streaming down on me I didn't feel creeped out or anything like that. I think I might have felt better if I'd had someone with me but I wasn't feeling panicky so much as I was a little nervous that some security officer may come along and question me even though I wasn't doing anything wrong! Still, I wouldn't have been surprised to come home, put the pictures on the computer, and find strange Full moon over trees2things on them. As it turned out, there wasn't anything unusual but it would have been cool if there were! Guess I'll have to go try again sometime!

After taking about a dozen pictures, I walked back to my car, debated shooting some pictures at the cemetery but then dismissed that idea, and headed back towards downtown Norwich. Considering some of the people that walk around downtown at night, I think I was more nervous there then outside of a reportedly haunted abandoned asylum but obviously nothing happened or I wouldn't be writing this post today!

Marina at night2 My first stop was Howard T. Brown Park next to the Norwich Marina, a spot I've gone to before on a full moon as I really like trying to take pictures of things reflecting off of the water. This picture shows the marker and tree next to the boat launch which is usually quite busy regardless of what time it is day or night as a lot of people like to fish on the Thames River. Surprisingly there were no boats being launched last night but there were some people at the park fishing off the docks or hanging out at the gazebo. I figured that as long as I left them alone, they'd leave me alone and that worked out just fine!

Looking down the Thames2 The moon was so beautiful that even though it was getting to be close to 1:00 a.m., it wasn't what you could call dark at all. This picture was taken from the dock looking down the river towards where it meets up with the Long Island Sound some 15 miles away. I really like the way the river looks like glass with the lights from nearby buildings reflecting off of it. Norwich just looks so much nicer at night!
Someone's Ship Came In!Speaking of nice, it looks like someone's ship came in while they were there to meet it! This ship has been docked at the marina since Friday evening and it sure is nice as well as very, very big! I would imagine that it costs more to fill up its tanks then I make in a half a year or longer! All I can say is that it must be nice to have money ... I'm sure that I'll never know myself!

Norwich's City Hall BuildingI decided that since I was out and about and it was such a nice night that I would make a few more stops before heading home so I turned my car and camera towards Norwich City Hall, a very beautiful building regardless of the time of day! The only problem I have with it is that there's just no way to seem to get a good angle for a picture that doesn't show some sort of street sign or another. The City Fathers really ought to look into that and rectify that as I'm sure lots of people take pictures of this gorgeous building, though most probably do it at a "normal" time of the day! If you look closely, you can see by the time on the clock tower that it was about 1:15 when I took this picture but I had one more stop I wanted to make before I finally put the camera away and went home.

The Water Street BridgeOn my commute to work, I have to cross over the Water Street bridge which connects the Laurel Hill side of Norwich - where I live - to downtown Norwich. As it was falling apart, the bridge was rebuilt a couple of years ago and is really very pretty. Antique lighting was used and every summer the City hangs baskets of petunias from each light. This picture doesn't really do the bridge justice at all but until I can figure out a better angle, it will have to do! Even at 1:15 in the morning there were a lot of cars crossing over the bridge so it really wasn't a good idea to try standing in the middle of the road to get a picture! Don't people ever go to bed??

Even though there were a lot of other places that I would like to have explored and taken some night pictures of, I finally decided that common sense should really prevail and that I should pack it in and go home. After all, my aunt reads my blog and she's going to tell my mother that I'm wandering around Norwich late at night to which I'm sure my mother will roll her eyes and decide that I am plain nuts! What I really need is to find someone who's willing to go out and prowl around with me at night as I'm most definitely a night person and have found that I really enjoy taking night shots. The world just looks so much different when the sun goes down and the moon comes up; it takes on an almost surreal quality and let's you look at things differently. Personally, I like what I've been seeing!

Night Sounds

There's a full moon out tonight but I'm not sure if I'm going to get the chance to go chase it down and try to take pictures or not as I'm working the evening shift so that a fellow employee can spend time with his family to celebrate his daughter's birthday. Actually, when Kevin first asked me about covering the shift for him I almost said "no" because I wanted to go out and take pictures but then I thought that was silly and took the shift instead. If the weather is good, perhaps I'll be able to go take some pictures when I get out of work at 11:00 and if not, there's always next month when I believe that the full moon will come around while I'm at the Rhode Island shore vacationing with some fellow bloggers. Now that would be a good time to go take some pictures!

In the meantime, I thought I would share this picture with you that I took last week while I was skulking around in the dark at Eastern Point in Groton. As you can see, there were a few clouds out and about but I thought it just made the moon that much more interesting and I was still able to capture a star or two. I named this picture "Night Sounds" because it was night and the moon is reflecting off of the Long Island Sound - kind of corny, eh?

Night Sounds

Maybe it's just me but I find this picture to be very peaceful and serene as I just love the moonlight reflecting off of the water. I think it's definitely one of my favorites out of the pictures I've taken recently.

So tell me, what do you think?

Creative Photography

Last week I entered Roger's Creative Photography Contest for the first time and had the chance to see some excellent entries posted by others in the contest. Last week's winner, Star 8278 from the blog "Life's a Dance You Learn as You Go" had a beautiful submission that definitely earned the award and left me longing for a few more creative talents - as well as a better camera!

Alas, I can't afford the type of camera I would really like to have so will continue to plug away with my little ole' Kodak EasyShare Z712 that takes passable pictures such as the moon shot that I took last week and have chosen for this week's entry -

Moonrise Over Norwich

What a pleasant surprise to see that my paramedic friend Dennis has entered the contest this week, too, with a picture that might be familiar to a few of you! If you'd like to check out more of the contest entries for this week then be sure to visit Roger's Creative Photography Contest blog.

Thanks again, Roger, for this fun contest!

"There's a bad moon on the rise ..."

With an almost full moon rising over Norwich, I couldn't help but go out and try my hand at a few more pictures of it. This time I decided to head down to the Norwich Harbor and see what I could get from that location. I'll have some pictures to post of the harbor in a future post but in the meantime I hope you enjoy these shots of the moon rising up over Laurel Hill.

If I'm going to keep up all of this photography stuff I might want to consider buying another micro sd card for my camera and more batteries - lots more batteries!

"When the moon hits your eye ..."

Taking my head out of the clouds for a little while I took some pictures of the almost-full moon last night instead ...

I played with them a little bit using the handy-dandy Picasa program I have on my computer but I kind of like the contrast between black & white and the moon glow. What do you think?

A Week of Lunacy Minus the Moon!

********************

Thank God it's my Friday and I have wrapped up another work week! This one has been a bit of a bear and I am more than thankful that it's over. To say that it was busy would be a major understatement but I can't for the life of me figure out why as we're not even close to a full moon (the next one isn't until the 26th).

Lest you think I'm just being superstitious about the the whole full moon thing please trust me - I'm not. Talk to the people who work in police departments, hospital emergency rooms, drug rehabs, psychiatric facilities, or any dispatcher anywhere and they will all tell you the same thing - it gets crazy during a full moon!

I've read several articles lately that try to debunk this particular "myth", as they like to refer to it, and chalk the erroneous belief up to five factors - media effects, folklore & tradition, misconceptions, cognitive biases, and communal reinforcement. Well, I don't care how scientific they want to be about it or what they attribute the lunacy to, I'm here to tell you it's true and no amount of scientific studies is going to convince me otherwise! People just get crazy during a full moon!

Well, no matter how you look at it and whether you believe it or not (do you??), all I can say is that as busy as this week was with one emergency after another (and off-the-wall ones at that), I can only imagine what it's going to be like in two more weeks when the moon is honest and truly full. I'm thinking hiding under a rock then might be a good idea!

Hmm, now that I think about it, I wonder if I could talk the Upper Management at work into giving us a little extra "Lunar Pay" for the times when the moon is full and it gets even more hectic than usual? What are the chances they'd tell me to "go bark at the moon" if I suggested it??
