Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt - "Plastic"

********************

This week's Photo Hunt (hosted by TNChick) theme is plastic and initially I was pretty flummoxed on what to use for a picture. I was pretty sure there weren't any pictures of plastic in my files and I couldn't think of much around the house that was worth taking a picture of.

Then it dawned on me that perhaps I could use the picture of Amanda's broken cell phone that she had taken a couple of weeks ago because they part that was broken was made of plastic. Perfect!

How - you might ask - did her phone end up in this sorry state of disrepair? Well, let's put it this way ... when you glomp your mother at a concert and land on your phone in addition to your mother in a pile on the hard ground, this is what happens!

Happy Photo Hunting and have a fantastic weekend!

Note: For those NOT familiar with the term, Glomping is a form of greeting used mainly among Anime fans. A typical "glomp" involves bear hugging someone, tackling them, and latching on tightly, though not enough to intentionally hurt the recipient. Perhaps I should add that it's not a good idea to have your cell phone in your pocket when you land on top of the person you have glomped! This phone eventually broke in half completely, despite the best efforts of duct tape, and Amanda now has a new phone that she likes much, much better. I, on the other hand, am still stuck with my old LG phone as we used my upgrade to get her a new one!

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt - "Music"

********************

Now here's a topic I haven't written about this week at all! Yeah, right! Because it has been so "rock star" heavy around here lately I wanted to do something different. In looking through my pictures, I was hoping to post one of Amanda's concert band pictures from last year for this week's Photo Hunt theme of music but apparently they are all downloaded onto the other computer that is at home - where I am not! Oops!

To that end it's back to rock & roll and I figured that nothing screams MUSIC! like a rock concert complete with pyrotechnics and a barrage of security personnel protecting the front of the stage. This picture was taken at the My Chemical Romance concert that I took Amanda to back in May at The DCU Center in Worcester, Massachusetts. Up until recently it was the best night of Amanda's life but as earlier posts from this week indicate, that has since changed some!

Everyone have a melodious Saturday and happy photo hunting! Don't forget to vote in my poll here and to go by and say "Happy Birthday" to our favorite comedy provider - Sandee!

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt - "Happy"

********************

This week's Photo Hunt, hosted by TNChick, has a theme that is actually a relatively easy one as far as being able to find a photo to post. There were more than several choices that I could have made but I chose this picture that was taken in the summer of 2000 as it's one of my very favorites of Amanda and Jamie as - get this - they're actually getting along and smiling! Don't they look happy??

I'm more used to them looking something like this -

Have a very happy Saturday and enjoy the Hunt!

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt - "Funky"

********************
"Won't you take me to Funky-town ..." those lyrics are sure to be stuck in my head all weekend as this week's theme for the Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt, hosted by the gracious TN Chick, is funky.

When I first saw that I drew a complete and total blank as to what might be available in my photo collection that qualified as funky. Granted, I was a teenager in the late 70's and funky was everywhere but I was also pretty conservative and bypassed the whole funky disco-era as much as possible. I can honestly say I never set foot in a single disco though I did enjoy a lot of the music (yeah, yeah, I heard that!)

So ... what to do for funky? Think, think, think ...

Leave it to Amanda to come up with the perfect idea for a funky picture. She decided just yesterday that her black boots were too boring the way they were and decorated them with some puffy paint that we had left over from another project. Add those newly decorated boots to a pair of purple fishnet tights and her baggy white shorts and what you get is ...

Funky!!

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt - "Tiny"

********************

Once upon a time very, very, very, very long ago there was a little girl named Linda who lived at her beloved Grandfather's house with her mother and her older brother as her father was stationed overseas with the United States Air Force.

Linda's Mom used to make the cute little dresses that Linda wore and dressed her up "like a little china doll" because she was "just so cute". Linda's Mom has remarked jokingly that she "doesn't know what happened" and Linda agrees!

Comparatively speaking, I used to be somewhat "tiny" but those days are long gone!

Happy Photo-Hunting!

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt - Shadows

********************
Photo Hunters Logo
Gettysburg Pickett's Charge
For this week, TNChick, gave us the Photo Hunter theme of "Shadows". Even though I used this picture recently in one of my slideshows for my post on The Battle of Gettysburg, I thought it might be nice to use it again.

This pictures shows shadows across the fields where Pickett's Charge took place on July 3rd, 1863 - land that stretched three-quarters of a mile from Seminary Ridge near Spangler's Woods where the Confederates were staged to Cemetery Ridge where the Army of the Potomac waited.

Commander of the Confederate Army General Robert E. Lee ordered a full frontal attack on the Union troops and 12,000 to 15,000 Southerners led by Major General George E. Pickett charged across this very field towards the Union center . The plan proved disastrous, however as only 5,000 Southerners survived the charge and shortly afterwards Lee retreated to Virginia ending the Battle of Gettysburg, the bloodiest battle of the Civil War.

As one of the darkest days in the history of our country, shadows across this field seem only fitting.

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt - "Shiny"

********************
Photo Hunters Logo
As per usual, I wasn't sure what I was going to be able to find for this week's Photo Hunt theme of "Shiny" and was giving serious consideration to punking out again this week when opportunity presented itself in the form of a hanging disco ball.

The company that I work for, American Ambulance Services, Inc., celebrated its 35th anniversary at a party held under the tent at the American Wharf Marina on Friday evening. All employees were invited and we were treated to unlimited beer and wine along with a delicious variety of foods. We were also given a commemorative t-shirt to celebrate the occasion.

Because I'm not much of a drinker (translated that means very, very rarely) unlimited free alcohol doesn't hold a lot of attraction for me but it sure does for a lot of the other people I work with. On occasions like this I prefer to sit back with my one glass of white zinfandel and observe the evening unfold.

After everyone had eaten, our boss gave a small speech before a large cake was cut and then the DJ turned up the music and the real entertainment of the evening began. I thought I had stepped back into the 70's as the DJ opened up with Play That Funky Music and followed it up with a plethora of disco dance tunes that beckoned those who just couldn't resist strapping on their boogie shoes out to the dance floor.

Let me just say right here and right now that I don't dance. I never have and I never will - except on very rare occasions when forced onto the dance floor under duress by well-meaning friends. Despite the fact that I graduated from high school in 1976 and was more than old enough to do so, I never set foot in a single disco club - ever. That's not to say that I didn't watch my fair share of Dance Fever and I saw Saturday Night Fever a couple of times, as well as owned the soundtrack, but outside of that the entire disco scene was as foreign to me as Japanese writing. 私が意味するものを知りなさいか

While watching some of those who had truly enjoyed the free beer and wine attempting to recapture the 70's out on the dance floor and rolling my eyes towards the ceiling in utter disbelief at what was going on out there, it dawned on me that I needed a picture for today's post when I noticed the silvery disco balls that were hanging overhead. A picture of one of them would be the ideal thing! I only had my cell phone camera with me and it takes notoriously bad pictures so Beth, a lovely lady that works in my department as a Scheduler, took a picture for me using her much better cell phone camera and emailed it over to me.

So there you have it - shiny - a little blurry but shiny! Now if you'll excuse me I have to go try to get this nasty disco beat out of my head as it's still there ... Dancin' and singin' and movin' to the groovin' ... AUGH!!

Saturday Photo Hunt - "Shoes"

********************

This week's theme for the Photo Hunt, hosted by TNChick, is shoes and the only problem with this theme is that there is a guy who has an alter-ego named Kelly who does a song called "Shoes" that manages to get caught in my head every time I hear or say the word shoes. If you haven't seen it (and chances are real good if you don't watch Fuse or spend a lot of time fooling around on You Tube then you haven't) then you might want to check it out here but I warn you - it's strange and not for those easily offended!

I wasn't exactly sure what I was going to do for this week's theme - my first thought was to throw everyone's shoes in a big pile and take a picture of them - but then I decided that I would just take a picture of what everyone had on their feet and go with that.

I've never been a big shoe fanatic so spend most of my time in sneakers when I'm not wearing my work boots so here you have my feet sporting their usual New Balance 601's -

Next up would be oldest daughter Amanda's Vans clad feet -

Last but not least are youngest daughter Jamie's flaming Chuck Taylor's -

Just looking at those shoes, I bet you'd be hard-pressed to tell that I had daughters and not two more boys! But they like their shoes which they say are comfortable and they're teenagers so what more could one expect??

Happy shoe-hunting to everyone!

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt - "Art"

********************

This week's theme for the Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt is something near and dear to oldest daughter's heart as it is ART. It also made it pretty easy for me to find pictures as she has most of her artwork posted over on her DeviantArt account so all I had to do was copy and paste. For once I didn't have to go scrambling around trying to find something!

First, meet the artist: this is Amanda in one of her "Revenge" modes. "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge" was the second album by her favorite band, My Chemical Romance (of which no doubt regular readers of this blog are more than familiar!). Apparently Amanda is not alone in liking to dress up like the lead singer of the band as I have come across many, many "Gerards" on the Internet. Ah well, as they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and I'm sure that Gerard is quite flattered by all the attention lavished on him by adoring fans.

Speaking of Gerard, this first piece of artwork is a pen and ink drawing of the man himself, also in "Revenge" mode. The lyrics are from the song "To the End" which is based on the short story "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner.

This next picture is one of Amanda's crayon drawings entitled "Once Upon a Toaster" and is of Gerard's brother, Mikey, bass player for My Chem. Apparently Mikey has somehow become associated with toasters (I remain happily clueless as to why) so Amanda thought she would draw him sitting on top of a toaster holding one of his beloved cups of coffee.

This is another crayon drawing, entitled "The Patient". It is drawn in Chibi style which originated in Japan but has become very popular in Western fandom. Found mostly in anime and manga, chibi are typically known to be super-cute, have large puppy-dog eyes, and often a mischievous personality. This one definitely fits those parameters!

Another crayon drawing done in chibi style of Snoh, a character that Amanda created on her own and one of which she has drawings in several other styles and poses in her DeviantArt gallery. Snoh is carrying Kappu (Japanese for cup and another character that Amanda uses frequently) filled with coffee - one of Amanda's very favorite beverages, especially if it's iced!

One more crayon chibi is of Amanda's alter-ego in the DeviantArt world known as Art Munkey or Mandy. You'll notice she's also holding the requisite cup of coffee and looking quite happy about it! I believe I've seen this very look on her face many times!

Last but not least is a drawing of Bob Bryar, drummer of MCR, which was done using a computer mouse. This drawing became the basis of my Peace Globe that you see over on my sidebar and which will be flying prominently this coming Wednesday as my entry for my Wordless Wednesday post.

Wednesday, June 6th, will be the second Blog Blast for Peace when bloggers across the globe will be displaying their Peace Globes as well as blogging about the theme Dona Nobis Pacem - Latin for Give Us Peace. It's not too late to make plans to join us and if you don't have a Peace Globe yet, just click here where Mimi Lenox explains how easy it is to design and post one of your own.

It might just be the most important piece (peace?) of art you create all year!

Saturday Photo Hunt - Colorful

********************

After having been out of the Hunt for the past two weeks, I felt it was about time I got back in the saddle and posted something. Fortunately, this week's theme of "colorful" coincided nicely with the blossoming of the beautiful azalea bush in front of my house. Unfortunately it doesn't bloom for long but for a few days at least we've got some gorgeous color in front of my humble abode!

For those with eagle eyes, you're right - there are no flowers in my window boxes yet but I hope to rectify that soon after a trip to the local plant nursery. You will, however, notice that the hanging petunias that I got for National Telecommunicators Week are blooming quite nicely and also add to the color in the upper right-hand corner of the picture!

Everyone have a great, safe, and colorful weekend!

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt - "Childhood"

********************
Photohunters logo
TNChick and the Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt took us in search of "childhood" this week so I get the feeling that there will be lots and lots and lots of pictures of kids up for all of us to ooh and aah over!

Not wanting to be left out of the fun, I managed to dig up a picture of my oldest brother, Mark, and myself that was taken way back in 1959 when, as my mother put it, I was so cute that she used to dress me up like a little doll. I must say that for someone with no hair, I think I looked pretty darned good! Eat your heart out, Britney Spears!

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt - "Steps"

This week TN Chick of the Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt had us looking for steps and my initial thought was to go over to the local City Hall building here in Norwich and take a picture of the very nice steps leading up to its main entrance. Alas, "the best laid plans of mice and men are ofttimes led astray" - especially when your teenage daughter takes your digital camera to the Anime Convention in Boston!

Okay, then, a quick back up to Plan B had me looking through my archives to see what I could find! Luckily I had a picture that was taken last summer when Amanda, Jamie, my friend Paula, and I took the train to New York City for the day and spent a good part of it at the American Museum of Natural History (yep, that would be the place in "A Night at the Museum" with Ben Stiller).

If you've been a regular reader of my blog you can see that Amanda has changed quite a bit since this picture was taken - at least her hair sure has - and you can also see that she's just beyond thrilled to be standing on the steps at the front of the museum with her sister while Teddy Roosevelt forever rides off into the sunset in the background.

Inside the museum were more exhibits than one could possibly see in just one day and it would have been very easy to have spent even more time there than we did but I had to go flunk the audition test for "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" later that afternoon! Perhaps that's a story for another post sometime!

Of all that there was to see at the museum, one of the girls' favorite exhibits was the dinosaurs. Jamie absolutely loved all of the fossils and the picture below is of her favorite T-Rex. If you're ever in New York City and have the time, I would highly recommend a trip to the American Museum of Natural History - especially if you have kids!

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt - "Clean"

********************
Welcome to the Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt where this week we had to find a picture of something clean. Now this one was tough because, to be perfectly honest, there isn't a whole lot around my house that seems to be clean right now! And that's pretty sad because I used to pride myself on a neat and orderly house.

I'm not sure when that all changed but it has and the amazing thing is, I don't feel any great desire to attack the kitchen floor with a mop or vacuum all the cat hair off of the stairs or even pick up the clutter from the dining room table. After all - who needs a dining room table?? If I clean off the dining room table that means I need to cook meals that we will eat while sitting at the dining room table. And who has time to do that when there is blogging to be done?

So after a somewhat frantic search around the house I finally found the below:

dishwasherIf nothing else ever gets cleaned around here these days, the dishes and the clothes usually get done! And thank goodness for that or there would be a just big, blank, clean space where today's Hunt was supposed to be!

Happy Hunting and a ...

Happy Easter

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt - "Water"

********************
This is the Feng Shui water element that I built a few years back when I was attempting to get my house "balanced". A friend of mine in California had brought the elephant out for me as a gift one year because she knew that I liked elephants and collected various types of them.

I wasn't really sure what to do with it for quite some time and then when I was reading a book on Feng Shui, I decided it would make the perfect water element for the southwest corner of the house which is supposed to be my relationship corner. I figured it might do better than the coat rack that had previously stood in its place!

Well ... it hasn't improved my relationship status but it makes for a very nice conversation piece!

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt - "Drink"

********************

This week's photo hunt theme is "Drink" and I decided I should go with the most popular drink in my household currently which is ... tea! There is nothing better on a cold March evening (or any cold evening come to think of it!) than a nice hot cup of tea.

This picture is of a teapot and matching mugs that was given to me by my Great Aunt Del when she was cleaning out her apartment not too long ago. I have a collection of teapots (18 as of last count) and there's always room for more! I also have quite the selection of teas and a lovely wooden tea chest that was given to me this past Christmas to keep them in.

Never let it be said that we are not civilized in this part of Connecticut! Or at least in my small part of it! Now everyone go enjoy their green beer or Irish whiskey or whatever you're raising a glass of to celebrate this St. Patrick's Day! I think I'll have a cup of Earl Grey - hot!

Slater Memorial Museum

Posted y Picasa

For this week's theme of architecture I have chosen the most prominent building on the campus of the Norwich Free Academy, where Amanda attends ninth grade. This building is the Slater Memorial Museum which houses not only the school's auditorium but also a museum and art gallery.

The building is named for John Fox Slater, a successful Norwich businessman and donor of the largest gift made to education in his day; the establishment of a $1-million fund "for the education of freed men" in 1882.

In 1884, the son of John Fox, William Slater, expressed an interest in finding a way to honor his distinguished father. It was suggested that a building for The Norwich Free Academy would be a tribute to his father's far-sighted gift of philanthropy, and to that end Mr. Slater provided $100,000 for its construction. The building was designed in the Richardsonian-Romanesque style by Worcester architect Stephen Earle.

"Meanwhile, the Academy's third principal, Dr. Robert Porter Keep, a noted Greek scholar, suggested the idea of creating a collection of plaster casts of some of the world's greatest sculptures for the new museum. On March 23, 1887, Edwin Robinson, then in charge of the classical collections for the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, accepted Dr. Keep's offer to select, purchase and install a collection of Egyptian, Near Eastern, Greek, Roman and Italian Renaissance casts in the museum. Robinson went on to become Director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and now, more than 100 years later, the Slater cast collection is one of the three largest remaining in the United States." **

The Slater Memorial Museum is truly one of Norwich's finest buildings and is quite majestic during all seasons. Maybe one of these days I'll actually go to the museum part; Amanda tells me it's very interesting!
