I've Got a Question, You've Got an Answer

With Halloween just two days away there are lots of things that run through one's mind - picking the perfect costume, carving jack-o-lanterns, bobbing for apples, things that go bump in the night, and candy - lots and lots of candy.

I have to think that the candy manufacturers take more delight in this time of the year than they do any other and thankfully you never hear them say things like "this year's Halloween candy sales fell short of expectations" like you hear retailers bemoaning Christmas sales. And thank goodness for that because Halloween is supposed to be fun. It's the one time of the year when you can go knock on virtual strangers' doors dressed in an outrageous costume and they give you something yummy rather than throw you off their property and call the cops! How cool is that?

And that brings me to our question -

I'm rather found of the miniature Mr. Goodbar candy bars myself but when I was a kid I absolutely loved the little wax bottles that had some sort of syrupy goo in them or the wax lips - anyone else remember those??

  1. Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Yummy. Then after that it's dark chocolate as in Hershey's.

Yes, I remember those wax bottles with the yucky stuff inside. I remember the wax lips too. :)

  2. Oh yes I remember those wax bottles and that sugary sweetened water in them too! Yum....

Do I have to pick just one candy? I love the malted balls, anything chocolate, especially with peanut butter and those chewy buttery candies. Darn, can't think of the name. But if Peanut gets some I'll come back and let you know.

    Happy Halloween!

  4. oooh, I love snickers, nestle crunch, anything chocolate. The darker, the better!
And I loved the wax lips and wax soda pop bottles, too! They still sell them.

  5. Subvet and I just had this conversation as he's going to pick up our hand out candy tonight or tomorrow am.

I want snickers (best with a Dr Pepper)..not the miniature little less than a bite sized ones either! I want the fun size!! And this year I'm going to hold some back cuz I ran totally out last year and didn't get to eat ANY! :-(

  7. Howl-o-ween candy...a subject near and dear to my heart.

Being a 45 year old, I remember trick or treating for the WHOLE NIGHT... none of this 6-8 kind of thing. And, boy, we'd rack up...I mean RACK UP!

After we spent our night trolling the streets , so to speak, we'd dump our booty and get to sortin' by candy prioirty.

Mary Janes, tootsie rolls, bit-o'honeys, peanut butter kisses, taffy, and caramels got in the "yuck pile"

Life savers, pixie stix, safety pops, and dum-dums were in the "just okay pile."

Homemade items and apples were in the "throw away pile."

Commodities included charms blow pops, sweet tarts, wacky wafers, necco rolls, ju-jubes, Dots, smarties, chick-o-sticks, tootsie pops, and the cool wax things (which we liked).

Chocolate candy bars ruled. Hershey bars, butterfingers, milky ways, Heath bars, snickers, peanut butter cups, Nestle crunch, $1000 grand bars, and three musketeers scored major "keep" points.

Gone but not forgotten were marathon bars, bun bars, choco-lite bars, clark bars, and zotz. Those were always my faves.

Any bubblegum or chewing gum ruled -- double bubble, bazooka, rainblo bubble gum, chicklets, razzles or the like.

Funny memory? We had a dentist down the street who handed out money instead of candy.

I miss those NW Ohio cool, sugar buzzed, all night halloween days.

  8. For those of you who really want to take a walk down memory lane, there is a place in Maine (sorry Linda) called "Yummys". Its on Rt 1 in Kittery or just beyond. They also have a website that I believe is www.yummys.com but you might want to google it to get the address right. If you can name it , I can almost put money on it, that they have it.

Yes, I remember those little wax bottles with the sugary water ~ and the wax lips.

Um, Linda, are you planning on trick or treating this year?
That's what it sounds like. :-D

  11. For me, it's Nestle's Crunch Bars that make me smile along with the rolls of sugar-laden Smarties.

And you bet I remember those little wax bottles and lips. We'd buy them at the little shop where we bought our comic books. And, in those days, I couldn't live without the orange flavored Pez or Pixie Stix!!!

  12. It's the 10 on Tuesday theme this week, and I'm hard-pressed to narrow it to one. I guess I'll go with the Reese's cups since those are the ones I've been cherrypicking from my kids' stash from their downtown trick or treating foray Saturday.

  13. I'm late, but I have an excuse, right? ;)

I like DumDum Lolli's. I can't justify ever buying them b/c they're tiny and well, I live alone. But they are YUMMY!

  14. I don't eat candy and Halloween isn't as big here as it is there so we just buy mixed sweets for when the children knock.

  19. Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Reese's Pieces are my two top favorites. I don't even remember the last time I actually went "Trick-or-Treating" as a kid. Lots of fond memories of going through the old neighborhood, however. Hope you have a great Halloween, Linda!
